You don’t need an expensive gym membership or a trainer to improve your health. I share ways to take back your health on a budget.
After trying many different Pinterest recipes, I finally concocted my own version of Skinny Water.
In a 48 oz pitcher, add:
- 1/2 cucumber, sliced thin
- 2 T. freshly grated ginger
- 1 whole lemon, sliced thin
- a handful of fresh mint leaves
- Fill the pitcher with ice cold water and place in the fridge overnight.
I am very sensitive to pesticides and prefer to wash all of my produce with Fit Fruit and Vegetable Wash. It has been a life saver as just rinsing produce does not work for me. In a matter of minutes of biting into a piece of fruit or vegetable, I develop an itchy throat and swollen eyes. The only way to combat that is to put myself into a Benedryl induced coma or just use the produce wash. I prefer the latter.

No Gym, No Shoes, No Problem
So you want to workout but you don’t want to join a gym? No problem!
If you work at home or in an office setting, considering investing in the Gaiam Custom Ball Chair. I arrive early to work and so I can sneak in a few minutes of a workout without freaking my office friendsout! The chair comes with a video and a workout booklet. I also use it to sit on while I work, however after a while, I wheel it into an empty office. My office friends know they can use it whenever they like. I knew I would use it for a long time and liked the idea of it looking more like a chair, so I purchased the slipcover for the ball. I chose green, however there are other colors available. The legs are easily adjusted, so it works at a variety of desk heights. If I decide to take it home again and want to just use it to workout, I will take off the slipcover. For now, it helps me work on my posture and core.
Walk With Friends
A group of women at my office stay after work 2-3 days a week and walk in the neighborhood adjacent to our office building. It works well for them because they only have to change their shoes and they’re off! No membership, no special clothing, just good old fashioned walking.
Step It Up!
We have two flights of steps at work and I didn’t realize quite how out of shape I was, until I started working here a year ago. I was winded just walking up those steps. At least once a day I will take a few extra minutes and do an extra trip up and down the steps. I feel good about sneaking in a mini leg/butt work out and it pumps oxygen to my brain, helping me stay awake at my desk.
Yoga or other kind of stretching keeps your body limber and your movements fluid. It also helps in the romance area if you know-what-I-mean. A yoga mat is all you REALLY need to get started. Your pj’s or other comfy clothes will suffice. You are working out in the privacy of your home, not in a fashion show, after all.
I splurged on yoga socks (yes, there is such a thing!). They help me improve my balance during Standing Tree Pose and they hide my hideous toes, which I find to be a distraction.
How do you sneak in exercise in to your busy day?
Burn Baby Burn (On a Budget)
After much urging from our then 18 year-old daughter, I decided to join a gym. When I say, “much urging,” I mean arm-twisting, begging, flyers dropped in my lap urging. “I’m not a gym person,” I’d say. “But mom, we could go together.” Blue-gray eyes staring into my soul, putting me into a trance. I should take control of my health. I’ve been wanting to lose weight. She’s not embarrassed to work out with me in public??
Then Planet Fitness came to town.
Grand Opening Special
The Grand Opening special was 10.00/down and only 20.00/month.
It was easier to say NO to the expensive gyms in town. I had been burned before when I purchased a lifetime membership, only to have them pack up in the middle of the night. I wouldn’t be fooled again. Well, the commercials kept coming, as did the begging from my my daughter, so I decided to check it out. I liked how the gym appealed to those, ahem, people who may not be in top-notch shape.
Sign Me Up!
After scouring a brief contract, I signed on the bottom line! The 20.00/month option allows me to bring a guest with me each time I work out and unlimited use of tanning and massage chairs. 7 minutes of heaven in the hydro massage chair is worth it! I could have gone with the 10.00/month plan but I am hoping my husband will come with me.
Skip the Expensive Clothes and Shoes
As tempting as it was, I did not run out and buy the best workout clothes. I took advantage of my Amazon Prime account and found these great deals. PF gives you a free black COTTON t-shirt. Yes, cotton. Hello! I don’t pretend to be a gym rat, but even I know you don’t work out in 100% cotton! I already had fairly new shoes and socks, so with just a few dollars, I was ready to burn baby burn!
PF is open 24/7 so it works for anyone’s schedule. I work 9:00 am -5:00 pm. I tried working out at 4:00 am while my husband and I were carpooling. That was cray cray! Come 8:00 am, I was ready for a nap! Now I am on a more basic schedule, after work and on the weekends. I am determined to keep making baby steps. My first goal is to just get my butt there 5 days a week! I alternate between the 30 Minute Express room and the treadmill.
What positive steps have you made for your health lately? I’d love to hear about them!
