Changes Begin By The Breaking Rules
I am breaking my own rule about keeping my life private by creating a blog. My “Circle of Trust” as the Dad refers to in Meet the Fockers, has been pretty small by choice. I am putting myself and our life out there in the hopes that it will make a difference in the life of even just one person.
The irony is that we attempt to disown our difficult stories to appear more whole or more acceptable, but our wholeness even our wholeheartedness-actually depends on the integration of all our experiences, including the falls. From Rising Strong: The Reckoning, The Rumble, The Revolution, by Brene Brown, PhD, LMSW.
So, there you have it. I am about to reveal our falls. Mark my words. You will also see us “rise strong.”
My husband and I aren’t ones to make New Year’s Resolutions, as we know many are never fulfilled. However, after a few health scares, we have heard the warnings loud and clear and starting after the holidays seemed to be the way to go. We can’t believe we have arrived at our current weight and conditions, but here we are. The last 6-7 years have really put us to the test: We lost a few family members and friends along with the best dog in the world. Throw in a rebellious daughter who has been the center of your universe and you have a recipe for self-destruction. Our coping mechanisms were not great ones unfortunately. We chose to eat our way through our emotions.
Despite all that, I am very happy to say that our marriage has only grown stronger. I don’t know what I would do without my husband who is also my best friend. Lord willing, we will celebrate 27 years of marriage this April. Life is just getting started for us empty-nesters and our first grandchild is due in just 16 days. It is time to kick start some major life changes.
Change #1: Get moving!
We began the new year walking in the woods, then actually USING the gym membership we pay for each month.
Change #2: Make better food and drink choices
We use the Lose It App that my friend Crystal told me about. We record every beverage, mint and piece of food we eat. Talk about accountability. Ouch. We choose food much more carefully now and read all those darn labels. We also weigh ourselves at the same time every morning.
Hearty bacon, eggs and potatoes have been replaced with a protein shake. Aldi has the best prices by far. We also purchased our blender bottles there at a fraction of the price of the local super stores. A quick comparison of prices online will really open your eyes to the savings.
Change #3: Keep focused on the positive
Thankfully, Mike and I have learned to keep each other motivated and fixed on the great things to come in our life. We have dreams that we are working to make a reality, one step at at time. And it feels great to check items off the list.
Results since January 1, 2017:
Mike has dropped 16 pounds. I have dropped 7 pounds. Most importantly, we are creating HEALTHY HABITS. Our goals are realistic and that may mean it takes longer to achieve. We are OK with that. We want LASTING change most of all.
If you are brave enough to ride along with us, strap yourself in. It may get a little rough at times.
